Background
In 2011-2012, the Towns of Port au Port East and Port au Port West-Aguathuna-Felix Cove collaborated and formed one regional fire department, called the Port au Port Regional Volunteer Fire Department.
The department provides fire services to both Port au Port East and West and offers the outlying communities of Campbell’s Creek, Point au Mal and Fox Island River fire services based on a fee for service protocols.
The Port au Port Regional VFD consists of twenty-six volunteer firefighters, with Fire Chief Wayne Deaves and Deputy Chief Daren Benoit. We provide the following services: Defensive/Offensive Firefighting in our area of responsibility and Vehicle Extrication for the entire Port au Port Peninsula and have mutual aid agreements with Lourdes and Cape St George Fire Departments.
Training
We have regularly scheduled three-hour training sessions every Sunday and members of our fire department participate in scenario-based training exercises throughout the year. Our training sessions offer firefighters a minimum training standard which is required prior to participating in firefighting activities and additional training offers Standard First Aid, Level C CPR/AED training.
